Khongoryn Els, Gobi Desert, Mongolia

Otherwise known as the Singing Dunes, Khongoryn Els are simply epic!

The sense of awe and achievement when you reach the summit of these spectacular dunes is second to none. We want all of our guests to have a chance to experience the true majesty of this landscape.

As with other natural wonders, the dunes attract visitors, so we come up with secret ways to enable our guests to experience the scale of this landscape with few or no other people in sight.

In some places these dunes are 300 metres high and 12km wide. They stretch over 100km. To reach the top is a challenge that is rewarded with spectacular views. If you have a chance, we really recommend exploring this area on camel back. We can arrange camel treks from minutes to months long!

On most days you can hear why they are called the singing dunes. Once or twice people have mistaken the noise to be an aircraft flying overhead, the sound is so loud.

Even the most mature visitors are bound to take delight at sliding down the dunes or simply watching the sand as it shifts and sculpts new dunes each minute.

Panoramic Journeys arranged the filming for the famous BBC Human Planet Deserts Episode that featured these fascinating dunes. During our journeys we regularly visit the family who starred in that story. Our team have fond memories of shooting that sequence with the dunes as the back drop to a story about surviving as a camel herder here during the harsh winter.
