Luxury Escapes to Bhutan
Getting under the surface of a country doesn't mean that you can't add a little opulence to your trip! In the last few years, several boutique and international luxury hotels have opened in Bhutan, and it is possible to upgrade from the 'standard class' hotels to luxury for either a part of, or the duration of your stay. As with all of the places we recommend, we like to try out these places for you (of course we do!) so that we can suggest our favourites in each valley, and let you know the best rooms, experiences and spa treatments in each hotel. So come and let us wrap you in up in cashmere blankets with a glass of warm Bhutanese cider and relax as you watch the sun set behind the lines of fluttering prayer flags.
Fans of the luxurious Aman Resorts will love their Amankora lodges, located in five valleys in Bhutan: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and the more remote Phobjikha and Bumthang. Uma by COMO has two small, but perfectly formed boutique properties in fantastic locations overlooking the valleys of Paro & Punakha. Le Meridian has recently opened hotels in Paro and Thimphu, both with indoor pools. In the capital Thimphu, there is the very centrally located and imposing Taj Tashi and the lower key Queen's hotel, the Terma Linca. In Paro there is the sustainably run Bhutanese-owned Zhiwa Ling hotel and in Phobjikha there is the cosy Gangtey Goenpa Lodge.
Some properties also have spa facilities and yoga teachers on site. There are lodges in some really quite remote valleys, enabling those who like a little luxury to also get deeper into the country.
Panoramic Journeys have experience in organising top end experiences; Charter a flight to eastern Bhutan to buy a handmade woven kira from one of the famous weaving villages; luxury outdoor camping – opening your tent door to find you have woken up above the clouds, and being handed a steaming cup of tea whilst still snuggled in your sleeping bag. High-end adventure trekking; take a helicopter to walk amidst the shimmering lakes whilst witnessing stunning views of the entire Himalayan mountain range. Wildlife experiences; trek to set camera traps with a WWF snow leopard researcher or stay in the royal camps in the Royal National Parks.
Enjoy exclusive dining experiences in your private villa, around a bonfire, or at one of the best restaurants in Bhutan – our favourite though is a traditional Bhutanese meal cooked in a local farmhouse, enjoyed around the roaring fire or a picnic under fluttering prayerflags with views of the eastern Himalaya.
We like to keep some of our top end experiences exclusive and offline… so you will need to call and chat with one of us to get a full idea of what we can offer.
