On the water

Canoeing in Mongolia

Mongolia – land of adventure, inspiring hospitality and never-ending landscapes. What better way to explore the luscious countryside and view this barely touched country from a different angle than winding your way down a river in a raft, canoe or kayak?

Feeling brave? Perhaps take to the waters with higher swell and tackle the rough and tumble that such rivers as the Bashkaus Gol in the Altai region, has to offer. Rafting here is generally regarded as one of the most difficult challenges and reaches ‘advanced’ and even ‘extreme’ status during high water season. In amongst the thrills, spills and adrenalin rushes of the rapids, make time to explore the abandoned gold mines, hunt for cabins and locate old Indian grounds close to the western rivers.

Alternatively, the gentler, more picturesque paddling journeys along the Ider Gol in Uliastai or Tuul and Kherlen Gol just east of Ulaanbaatar may be more appealing. A morning of waterborne journeying is enough to encourage those hunger pangs, so stop en route to see if anyone is home as you spot traditional Mongolian gers and hear the raucous of a large flock of livestock near to the riverside. Be welcomed with open arms, share traditional food and drink with the families and gain an insight into their remarkable nomadic ways of life before heading back to the water.

Help pitch the tents close to a family ger and settle into a night under canvas with the luxury of a portable shower to warm you up if you happen to get wet during the day! Marvel at the blanket of stars overhead whilst toasting marshmallows on your campfire and waiting for your hot water bottle to warm your sleeping bag. Share stories, play games and be a part of creating a truly memorable experience for all involved. Each journey involves more than just being on the water; it’s important to us that you meet the people of Mongolia, immerse yourself in the lives of nomadic families, hear their stories and learn about their fascinating culture and rich history. Embrace the great outdoors and make this more than just a kayaking trip; create a Mongolian adventure of your own to talk about for years to come.
