Hot Air Ballooning Myanmar

Hot Air Ballooning Myanmar

Myanmar is a land rich in scenic beauty, incredible architectural monuments and diverse culture. Sightseeing by hot air balloon is a truly remarkable experience, allowing you to venture off the beaten path and gain a unique perspective of the country and its people.

For many visitors a dawn flight over the ancient site of Bagan is one of the highlights of their journey. Flights have also started in other scenic locations. Now travellers can choose between several other sites including the tranquil floating gardens of Inle Lake, active markets of Mandalay, the rolling hills of Pindaya and most recently, the misty tropical forests inland from Ngapali beach.

Shan State’s famed Inle Lake is home to the Inthar people, who live on and around the lake. Drifting over floating villages and water gardens, you can see fishermen looking for their first catch of the day and boats laden full of produce on their way to the market by the immense labyrinth of canals.

Pindaya is set against some of the highest Shan Mountains. Here you will fly along mountain valleys passing tiny Shan hamlets and hill top pagodas, occasionally swooping down to the delight of villagers who have never seen a hot air balloon before.

Ballooning over Mandalay offers a variety of intriguing views of its temples, markets and people, as well as the activity on the Irrawaddy busy river bank.

At Ngapali bird watchers will have a good chance of spotting some rare and exotic birds as the balloon drifts low at tree top level over pristine jungle, and as you rise high above the hills you can see the coastline of Bay of Bengal, with its fishermen and sandy beaches.

There are two companies offering balloon flights in Myanmar, both professional operators with immaculate safety records. These offer places in scheduled flights and also private balloon rides. Balloon basket sizes vary from 16 to 2 passengers.

Pick up is normally around 5.30am for transfer to the launch site. Tea, coffee and pastries are served before briefing and climbing aboard for takeoff. Fresh fruit and a celebratory chilled sparkling wine are served after landing.

A hot air balloon flight over any of these incredible sites is an interesting and exhilarating experience.

"Alone, the magical balloon flight over Bagan justified the entire trip – anyone who has the opportunity to make a flight should not hesitate – 1 hour that will take some beating…"
